Beaded Bracelets, origins and evolution!

Beaded Bracelets, origins and evolution!

May 16, 2019

Bead bracelets have been made and worn for thousands of years. Today they are mostly worn as fashion accessories to accent clothes. In certain cultures the bead bracelets have religious or spiritual significance such as rosary beads. They have also been used as items to be traded. Over time these bracelets have evolved as many more materials are now available to make them from.

Ancient Egyptians wore bead bracelets made from bones, stones and woods as well as other materials, for religious and spiritual reasons. In fact the scarab Bracelet is one of the most recognized symbols of ancient Egypt. The scarab represented rebirth and regeneration.

The Native American Indians have worn bead bracelets dating back to pre-historic times. Jewelry styles were different in every American Indian tribe. They mined turquoise and used the shells to create a bracelet. They also used natural metals, animal bones and ivory. After colonization, Native American jewelry making traditions remained strong. They began to incorporate more modern materials such as glass beads and more advance metal working technologies.

Today bead bracelet making is being taken up as a hobby, mostly by Women. You will often find bead bracelets and necklaces for sale in markets but also online. Modern materials used are plastics, glass and crystal. Glass beads are probably the most popular. Glass beads are pressed and mass produced by preparing a molten batch of glass of the desired colour then the molten glass is poured into moulds to form the required shape. The same process generally applies to plastic beads. Beads are divided into several types of categories based on different criteria such as component materials, manufacturing process, place or period of origin, surface patterning or general shape.

Bead supplies and bead bracelets can be purchased online and in local stores. Be careful when purchasing online that the catalogue picture matches the actual bead. Best to order a small quantity first to ensure you receive what you should have.

Bracelets also make great gifts particularly if it is something that you have made yourself. It just adds that nice touch and uniqueness. Perfect for a birthday or even as a baby gift to be given to new parents.

Whatever type of bracelet you choose and for whatever reason there is such a wide range to choose from. With so many different styles and materials you are sure to find the perfect one for you or that special someone.
